Charleston Beach Photos | How to Prep for Your Session

Charleston, South Carolina, may be known for its historical charm and cobblestone streets, but this session captures a different side of the beautiful city. I'm thrilled to share the highlights from Alex and Tyler's unforgettable beach session in Charleston. We had an absolute blast transforming the same beautiful setting into a series of vibrant and diverse photographs, capturing everything from adorable casual moments to steamy, after-dark shots. And guess what? You don't need to run all over the place to get a variety of stunning photos. Here's how we made the most of our time and location—and how you can too!

Get the most with Outfit & Prop Changes

Why scramble to multiple locations when a quick outfit change can do the trick? Alex and Tyler started off in classic, comfy jeans and tees. Their casual, sun-kissed photos were the epitome of laid-back beach vibes. Next, they switched to swimsuits for fun and flirty sunset portraits. Voilà, two totally different looks without ever leaving the sand!

Lighting matters: From Golden Hour to After-Dark

One of the most enchanting aspects of beach photography is the play of natural light. Each time of day offers its own unique beauty, and knowing how to harness this can elevate your photos from good to breathtaking.

Golden Hour

We began Alex and Tyler’s session during the golden hour, that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset. The sun casts a warm, flattering glow, creating dreamy, romantic images. It’s perfect for those vibrant shots that make your heart skip a beat.

Blue Hour

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we entered the blue hour. The sky traded its fiery shades for cooler, tranquil tones. To the naked eye, it seemed too dark to shoot, but on camera, it was just gorgeous. The colors are phenomenal!

After Dark

And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, we stayed a bit longer for some sultry after-dark shots using flash. This style is daring and dramatic, adding an element of mystery and allure. The contrast between the dark backdrop and the illuminated subjects can create some truly steamy and dramatic images.

Planning Your Beach Session

Timing is Everything: The golden hours (just after sunrise or before sunset) offer warm, flattering light. Meanwhile, blue hour (twilight) provides cooler, ethereal shades, perfect for a moody vibe. And let’s not forget those after-dark, flash-lit moments that can add a dash of drama.

Outfits and Props

Bring a couple of outfit changes to switch up your look without changing locations. Casual wear, swimsuits, and even something a bit more formal can add variety. Don’t forget props like a beach blanket, sunhats, an umbrella, or a cute picnic setup. If you're a beach lover, you may even think beyond the basics. A beach ball, paddle board, or vintage surfboard can add an extra layer of charm and personality to your photos.

Be Prepared

Pack essentials like sunscreen, water, towels, outfits, shoes, and maybe a portable changing tent for quick outfit swaps. It'll get sandy...and wet...and that's ok! I promise the mess photographs beautifully. Just roll with it, and you'll have more fun. (I'll always let you know if your hair needs a tweak or if you have sand in a weird spot.)

Tip: Bring some baby powder to remove sand quickly and prevent it from sticking to your skin if it bothers you.

Trust the Process

Different lighting and photography styles can offer unique aesthetics. Be open to experimenting with natural light, twilight shades, and even flash photography after dark for those nostalgic, candid shots you'll love to reminisce over.

Embrace the Elements

Windy? Use it to your advantage for those perfect, windswept hair shots. Overcast? Think of it as nature’s softbox, providing even, flattering light.

The Beauty of Beach Sessions

Beach sessions are inherently versatile. Whether you're aiming for playful, romantic, or dramatic, the tranquil, ever-changing beach setting accommodates it all. Plus, the serene sound of waves and the expansive horizon can make you feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera. And who doesn’t want a bit of that beachy glow?

Choosing the right time isn’t just about capturing the best light—it’s also about comfort. Midday sun can be harsh and unflattering, not to mention it’s a surefire way to get a sunburn. Opting for early morning or late afternoon sessions not only offers more forgiving light but also cooler temps and fewer crowds.

Final Thoughts

Alex and Tyler’s Charleston beach session was a testament to the power of light, love, and a little bit of planning. Remember, you don’t need to travel far and wide for variety. A few well-planned outfit changes, a mix of props, and an understanding of how to use different types of light can go a long way in creating a diverse and captivating photo gallery.

So, the next time you’re planning a beach session (or any session for that matter), think about how to maximize your location. When you make the most of what you have and let the natural beauty of the setting do the rest, you'll get some amazing images. And remember, while the backdrop sets the tone, you're the stars of the show. Prioritize your overall experience, style, and personality; the rest will fall into place. When you're having fun, your photos will reflect that.
